Crazy But True Laws

I bought this book for my classroom. It is called, Chickens May Not Cross the Road and Other Crazy (But True) Laws. It is the funniest book. I know we have all heard of laws that states have that are just absurd. Well this lists a few of those. My students love it. Here are some funny examples:

"It's against the law to carry an ice cream cone in a pocket."
(Lexington, Kentucky)

"No one may take a lion to the movie theatre."
(Baltimore, Maryland)

"You may not swim on dry land."
(Santa Ana, California)

"Only the first four fireman to arrive at a fire will be paid."
(Zeigler, Illinois)

"No one may drive while asleep."
(Memphis, Tennessee)

"Trout fishing is against the law if you are sitting on a giraffe's back."
(Idaho State Law)

"Riding an ugly horse is illegal."
(Wilbur, Washington)

And Texas had to get one in there:
"Monkeys shall not ride on buses."
(San Antonio, Texas)

The book is really cute because all through out the book it tells reasons why we have laws and how laws are made. Most of these laws were written in the late 1800s to the early 1900s and they aren't even enforced anymore because they are so silly. But it's still funny to think about some of these actually being a law. I think I may make my kids make up their own laws tomorrow, that would be fun!

Got anything you wish would be a law???

How funny, and what a cute book! I may need it for my classroom. I'm so glad to know about the San Antonio law about monkeys...I was going to take my monkey on a bus tomorrow! Good save!

I've heard of some of those! I know in Oklahoma it is illegal to walk backwards on a Sunday. Cute book, I bet your kids get a kick out of it.

here's one I'd like to get rid of:
"From Love Field, you can only fly to cities within Texas, or states touching Texas." Can we add the Wright Amendment to that list of absurd laws???
